When building a long-lasting fence, the wood posts used for it matter just as much as the wire attached to it. The posts create the foundation and provide the structural support for the fence. The quality of wood posts can make or break the durability of the fence. If not treated and constructed properly, a post may rot or decay before the rest of the fence needs replacing. That’s why all wood posts from Pasture Management are made from Southern Yellow Pine and treated with CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate). Using CCA maximizes fence longevity by protecting against damage. Each of our posts meet or exceed the .40 CCA treatment standard, providing the highest-quality on the market for durability and longevity.
Sizes of Wood Posts
We understand every project is different, and we have a variety of wood posts in varying sizes and diameters to fit your requirements.
Our three most popular lengths are:
- 8 foot
- 7 foot
- 6 ½ foot
We also have the ability to make 9 and 10 foot posts when needed. The diameters of the posts range from 7-8 inches down to 3-4 inches.
Types of Wood Posts
Every fence serves a different purpose, and so does every post. Understanding the different qualities of each post can help you make the best decision for your project’s needs.
Corner posts are the foundation of any fence. The corner holds the largest amount of tension and stress from the wire.
Recommended corner post sizes:
- 6–7 inch × 8 foot
- 7–8 inch × 8 foot
For less demanding fencing applications such as a field fence, barbed wire, or electric fence, a 5–6 inch × 8 foot post may also be used as a corner post.
Line posts support the fence between the corners, keeping it aligned and straight. This post provides the support needed for most agricultural or residential fences; a standard, one-size-fits-all line post is 5-6 inch x 7 foot.
Fence boards are more commonly used for decorative purposes while still providing a boundary. This would be ideal for a fence around a house or lining a driveway.
